Atorva contains Atorvastatin, a synthetic lipid-lowering agent and HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor that effectively reduces cholesterol biosynthesis in the liver. The 10mg strength is often used as an initial dose for primary hypercholesterolemia or as maintenance therapy for patients requiring moderate cholesterol reduction. Atorvastatin demonstrates dose-dependent cholesterol lowering and provides cardiovascular protection through lipid modification and pleiotropic effects.
Purpose
Treatment of primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed dyslipidemia, reduction of cardiovascular events in patients with multiple risk factors, primary prevention of cardiovascular disease, familial hypercholesterolemia.

Warnings
Contraindicated in pregnancy, breastfeeding, active liver disease. Baseline and periodic liver function tests recommended. Report unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness. Avoid excessive grapefruit juice. Drug interactions: fusidic acid, cyclosporine, protease inhibitors, certain antibiotics. Increased myopathy risk with age >65, hypothyroidism, renal impairment. Prescription medicine.
Side Effects
Headaches, nausea, diarrhea, cold-like symptoms, muscle pain, joint pain, nasopharyngitis. Rare but serious: myopathy, rhabdomyolysis, hepatotoxicity.
