Memantine NMDA receptor antagonist for treating moderate to severe Alzheimer's disease and dementia.
Attentra contains Memantine, an uncompetitive NMDA receptor antagonist that modulates glutamatergic neurotransmission in the brain. It provides neuroprotection by preventing excessive calcium influx and glutamate-induced excitotoxicity associated with Alzheimer's disease pathology. Memantine may improve cognitive function, global functioning, and ability to perform activities of daily living in patients with moderate to severe dementia, though it does not cure or halt disease progression.
Purpose
Treatment of moderate to severe dementia of the Alzheimer's type, improvement or stabilization of cognitive function and activities of daily living, may be used alone or in combination with cholinesterase inhibitors (e.g., donepezil).

Warnings
Does not cure Alzheimer's or prevent cognitive decline progression. Benefits are modest - may slow decline but not reverse damage. Dose adjustment required for moderate to severe renal impairment. Use caution with conditions that raise urine pH (UTIs, renal tubular acidosis). May cause dizziness - fall risk in elderly. Monitor for neuropsychiatric symptoms. Drug interactions with NMDA antagonists, dopaminergic agents. Prescription medicine.
Side Effects
Dizziness, headache, confusion, constipation, drowsiness, hypertension, cough, dyspnea. Less common: hallucinations, agitation, anxiety, falls.
