Azithromycin macrolide antibiotic with convenient once-daily dosing for respiratory and other infections.
Azitma contains Azithromycin, a macrolide antibiotic with extended-spectrum antimicrobial activity and unique pharmacokinetic properties. Its exceptional tissue penetration and prolonged half-life allow for once-daily dosing and shorter treatment courses (often 3-5 days versus 7-10 days for other antibiotics). Azithromycin accumulates in tissues at concentrations 10-100 times higher than serum levels and persists for days after discontinuation, providing continued antimicrobial effect. It also possesses anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties.
Purpose
Treatment of community-acquired pneumonia, pharyngitis/tonsillitis, acute bacterial sinusitis, acute bacterial exacerbations of chronic bronchitis, uncomplicated skin infections, urethritis, cervicitis, genital ulcer disease, acute otitis media, prevention of disseminated Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) infection.

Warnings
Not for viral infections. Risk of QT prolongation and cardiac arrhythmias - avoid with other QT-prolonging drugs, electrolyte abnormalities, significant cardiac disease. May cause hearing impairment (usually reversible). Monitor for liver dysfunction. Risk of antibiotic-associated diarrhea including C. difficile. Complete full course. May interfere with some lab tests. Drug interactions with antacids, warfarin, digoxin. Pregnancy category B. Prescription antibiotic.
Side Effects
Diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting, headache, dizziness. Less common: QT prolongation, hearing loss (usually reversible), elevated liver enzymes. Rare: severe allergic reactions, Clostridium difficile colitis, hepatotoxicity.
Storage Instructions
Store at room temperature below 30°C. Protect from moisture and light. Keep in original packaging. Store out of reach of children.
