Brysk contains Paroxetine, a potent and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) that increases synaptic serotonin availability in the central nervous system. The 20mg dose represents the standard starting and maintenance dose for most indications. Paroxetine demonstrates efficacy across multiple psychiatric conditions including depression, anxiety disorders, and OCD. It has a shorter half-life compared to other SSRIs and unique anticholinergic properties at higher doses. Paroxetine requires gradual dose reduction upon discontinuation to minimize withdrawal symptoms.

Purpose

Treatment of major depressive disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder (social phobia), post-traumatic stress disorder, premenstrual dysphoric disorder.

Warnings

BLACK BOX WARNING - Increased suicidal thinking/behavior risk in children, adolescents, young adults (18-24) in short-term studies. Monitor closely, especially early treatment and dose changes. Not approved for pediatric use. DISCONTINUATION SYNDROME - taper gradually; abrupt discontinuation causes withdrawal (dizziness, paresthesias, anxiety, nausea). Serotonin syndrome risk with MAOIs, other serotonergic drugs. Contraindicated with MAOIs, pimozide, thioridazine. Bleeding risk increased. May impair judgment/motor skills. Sexual dysfunction common. Pregnancy category D. Prescription medicine.

Side Effects

Nausea, drowsiness, dizziness, insomnia, sexual dysfunction (decreased libido, delayed ejaculation, anorgasmia), dry mouth, sweating, tremor, asthenia, weight gain. Serious: serotonin syndrome, suicidal ideation, bleeding, hyponatremia, discontinuation syndrome.
