Caricef capsules contain Cefixime, a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic with extended-spectrum activity against gram-negative bacteria. Cefixime demonstrates excellent oral bioavailability and prolonged half-life allowing convenient once or twice-daily dosing. It works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to cell death. The 400mg strength represents the standard adult dose for most indications, providing effective treatment for respiratory, urinary, and sexually transmitted bacterial infections while demonstrating stability against many beta-lactamases that inactivate earlier generation cephalosporins.
Purpose
Treatment of uncomplicated urinary tract infections, pharyngitis and tonsillitis, acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis, community-acquired pneumonia, uncomplicated gonorrhea, acute bacterial sinusitis, otitis media.

Cefixime Trihydrate equivalent to Cefixime 400mg
Warnings
Contraindicated in cephalosporin allergy. Use caution with penicillin allergy (10% cross-reactivity). Complete full course to prevent resistance. Not for viral infections. May cause antibiotic-associated diarrhea including C. difficile. Monitor for hypersensitivity reactions. Dose adjustment required in renal impairment (CrCl <60 mL/min). May interfere with some laboratory tests. Pregnancy category B. Prescription antibiotic.
Side Effects
Diarrhea (16%), nausea (7%), loose stools (6%), abdominal pain (3%), vomiting, dyspepsia, flatulence. Rare but serious: Clostridium difficile colitis, hypersensitivity reactions, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, seizures.
