Cipralex contains Escitalopram, the S-enantiomer of citalopram and one of the most selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) available. Its high selectivity for the serotonin transporter with minimal effects on other neurotransmitter systems results in excellent tolerability and reduced drug interactions compared to other antidepressants. The 10mg strength represents the standard therapeutic dose for most indications. Escitalopram demonstrates efficacy across major depressive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, and other anxiety-spectrum conditions. The 14-tablet package represents a two-week supply at standard dosing.

Purpose

Treatment of major depressive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder with or without agoraphobia, social anxiety disorder (social phobia), obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Warnings

BLACK BOX WARNING - Increased suicidal thinking and behavior risk in children, adolescents, young adults (18-24) in short-term studies. Close monitoring essential especially during initial treatment and dose changes. Not approved for pediatric use. Serotonin syndrome risk - contraindicated with MAOIs (14-day washout required), linezolid, methylene blue. Use caution with other serotonergic drugs. QT prolongation - avoid with other QT-prolonging drugs, uncorrected hypokalemia/hypomagnesemia. Discontinuation syndrome - must taper gradually. Bleeding risk increased, especially with NSAIDs, aspirin, anticoagulants. May precipitate mania in bipolar disorder. Pregnancy category C. Prescription medicine.

Side Effects

Nausea, dry mouth, headache, increased sweating, drowsiness, insomnia, constipation, dizziness, sexual dysfunction (decreased libido, delayed ejaculation, anorgasmia). Rare but serious: suicidal ideation (especially early treatment), serotonin syndrome, QT prolongation, hyponatremia, bleeding.
