Cironex contains Escitalopram, the active S-enantiomer isolated from racemic citalopram, providing enhanced SSRI activity with improved side effect profile. Escitalopram's dual binding to the serotonin transporter (both orthosteric and allosteric sites) may contribute to its relatively rapid onset compared to other SSRIs. The 10mg formulation in a 14-tablet package provides a two-week treatment supply. Cironex is prescribed for depressive and anxiety disorders where serotonergic enhancement is therapeutic, offering effective symptom control with generally good tolerability and lower discontinuation rates compared to older antidepressants.

Purpose

Treatment of major depressive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), panic disorder with or without agoraphobia, social anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).

Warnings

BLACK BOX - Increased suicidal risk in children, adolescents, young adults. Monitor closely especially during initial treatment and dose changes. Not recommended under 18. SEROTONIN SYNDROME risk - contraindicated with MAOIs, use caution with other serotonergic drugs. DISCONTINUATION SYNDROME - taper gradually; abrupt cessation causes dizziness, paresthesias, anxiety, nausea. May prolong QT interval. Bleeding risk with NSAIDs, aspirin, anticoagulants. Can precipitate mania/hypomania. Angle-closure glaucoma risk. Avoid alcohol. Drug interactions with NSAIDs, anticoagulants, other psychotropics. Pregnancy/breastfeeding considerations. Prescription medicine.

Side Effects

Nausea, dry mouth, headache, increased sweating, drowsiness, insomnia, constipation, dizziness, fatigue, sexual dysfunction. Serious: suicidal ideation, serotonin syndrome, abnormal bleeding, hyponatremia, QT prolongation, seizures.
