Citanew 5mg provides a lower starting dose of Escitalopram, the highly selective S-enantiomer SSRI, particularly appropriate for initiating treatment in sensitive individuals, elderly patients, or those with hepatic impairment. The 5mg strength allows for careful dose titration, minimizing initial side effects while establishing tolerability before advancing to therapeutic doses. This lower dose may also serve as maintenance therapy for some patients achieving adequate response. The 14-tablet package provides two weeks of treatment at this dose. Escitalopram's high selectivity profile maintains excellent tolerability even at lower doses.

Purpose

Initial treatment of major depressive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, severe anxiety and panic disorders, social anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder. Maintenance therapy at lower dose for responders.

Warnings

BLACK BOX WARNING - Suicidal risk in young patients. Close monitoring essential. Not typically recommended for children except major depression in adolescents 12-17. Wait 14 days before/after MAOIs. Risk of serotonin syndrome with other serotonergic drugs. QT prolongation possible. Discontinuation syndrome with abrupt cessation - always taper gradually. May impair judgment/motor skills initially. Activation of mania/hypomania in bipolar disorder. Bleeding risk with antiplatelet drugs. Hyponatremia risk especially elderly. Pregnancy category C. Prescription medicine.

Side Effects

Lower doses generally better tolerated. Possible: dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, nausea, diarrhea or constipation, insomnia, headache, decreased sexual drive. Serious effects rare but possible: suicidal ideation, serotonin syndrome, bleeding abnormalities.
