Co Valid combines Valsartan (angiotensin II receptor blocker) with Hydrochlorothiazide (thiazide diuretic) in a fixed-dose formulation providing synergistic blood pressure reduction through complementary mechanisms. Valsartan blocks angiotensin II at AT1 receptors, preventing vasoconstriction and aldosterone secretion, while hydrochlorothiazide promotes sodium and water excretion, reducing blood volume. This combination addresses both vasoconstriction and volume overload components of hypertension. The 80/12.5mg strength represents a moderate-dose combination suitable for patients requiring dual therapy but showing sensitivity to higher doses or as step-up from monotherapy.

Purpose

Treatment of essential hypertension in patients not adequately controlled on valsartan or hydrochlorothiazide monotherapy, initial therapy for patients likely requiring multiple drugs, reduction of cardiovascular event risk.

Warnings

FETAL TOXICITY - discontinue immediately when pregnancy detected. Can cause injury and death to developing fetus. Contraindicated in pregnancy, anuria, sulfonamide hypersensitivity. Monitor for symptomatic hypotension especially in volume-depleted patients. Regular monitoring of electrolytes (potassium, sodium), renal function required. May cause hyperkalemia - avoid potassium supplements, potassium-sparing diuretics without monitoring. Avoid with aliskiren in diabetes. HCTZ may worsen gout, increase cholesterol/triglycerides, cause photosensitivity. Drug interactions with NSAIDs (reduce efficacy, increase renal risk), lithium (toxicity). Not for pediatric use. Prescription medicine.

Side Effects

Headache, dizziness, nasopharyngitis, upper respiratory infection, hypotension, electrolyte imbalances (hypokalemia, hyponatremia), increased urination, fatigue. Rare but serious: angioedema, renal impairment, hyperkalemia, photosensitivity.
