Itraconazole is used to treat yeast infections of the mouth and throat or of the esophagus (tube that connects the throat to the stomach). Itraconazole is in a class of antifungals called triazoles. It works by slowing the growth of fungi that cause infection.

Itraconazole has been shown to have a negative inotropic effect and it has been associated with reports of CHF.
There is limited information regarding cross-hypersensitivity between itraconazole and other azole antifungal agents. Caution is advised to be used in prescribing itraconazole capsules to patients with hypersensitivity to other azoles.
The use of capsules in pediatric patients is not recommended unless it is determined that the potential benefit outweighs the potential risks.
