Flupenthixol acts by blocking the dopamine (a neurotransmitter) receptors in the brain cells. Excess amount of dopamine receptors normally act to modify behavior and over-stimulation resulting in psychotic illness. Flupenthixol blocks these receptors to control psychotic illness. Thus it is neuroleptic with anxiolytic and antidepressant properties.

Warnings
It is advised to be used with caution in patients with organic brain syndrome, convulsion, urinary retention, hyperthyroidism and advanced hepatic or cardiovascular disease. It is advised to not be administered together with MAOIs.
Suicide/suicidal thoughts or clinical worsening.
It is advised to be used with caution in patients receiving SSRIs.
