Tinidazole is a 5-nitroimidazole derivative of the substituted imidazole compounds and possesses antimicrobial activity against anaerobic bacteria and protozoa. The mode of action of tinidazole against anaerobic bacteria and protozoa is believed to involve the penetration of the drug into the cell of the microorganism and subsequent damage of DNA strands or inhibition of their synthesis.

As with related compounds, alcoholic beverages is advised to be avoided during and for a least 72 hours following completion of tinidazole therapy because of the possibility of a disulfiram-like reaction (flushing, abdominal cramps, vomiting, tachycardia).
Drugs of similar chemical structure have been shown to potentiate the effects of oral anticoagulants. Prothrombin time is advised to be closely monitored and adjustments to the dose of the anticoagulants is advised to be made as necessary.
Male and female fertility may be affected when taking Tinidazole, therefore talk to your doctor if you are planning to have a baby.

• Nausea (feeling sick) or vomiting, loss of appetite, diarrhoea, stomach pain or cramps • Headache • Vertigo • Skin rash or itching (especially affecting the whole body). • Numbness, tingling, pain or weakness in hands or feet • Clumsiness or unsteadiness • Fever or chills and painful ulcers in the mouth • Sore or swollen mouth/tongue • Redness of the face or neck • Dizziness • Tiredness • Dark urine • Tongue discolouration or unpleasant metallic taste.
