The active ingredient estradiol valerate, a prodrug of the synthetic 17ß-estradiol, is chemically and biologically identical to endogenous human estradiol. It substitutes for the loss of oestrogen production in menopausal women, and alleviates menopausal symptoms. Oestrogens prevent bone loss following menopause or ovariectomy. Ovulation is not inhibited during the use of Progynova, and the endogenous production of hormones is hardly affected.

For the treatment of postmenopausal symptoms, HRT is advised to only be initiated for symptoms that adversely affect quality of life. In all cases, a careful appraisal of the risk and benefits is advised to be undertaken at least annually and HRT is advised to only be continued as long as the benefit outweighs the risk
The risk of blood clots in the veins (also called deep vein thrombosis, or DVT) is about 1.3 to 3–times higher in HRT users than non-users, especially during the first year of taking it.
HRT is not recommended for women who have heart disease, or have had heart disease recently. If you have ever had heart disease, talk to your doctor to see if you is advised to be taking HRT.
