It has been postulated that the drug acts by stabilizing liver cell membranes, thereby reducing their permeability to certain toxic substances. Silymarin has not been reported to alter normal pregnancy, and there has been no evidence of embryo toxicity. There is no evidence of impaired development of the breast-fed infant.
