Bethanechol chloride acts as a selective cholinergic agonist that directly stimulates muscarinic receptors of the parasympathetic nervous system, with minimal effects on nicotinic receptors. This biochemical activation increases the smooth muscle tone of the detrusor urinofacient muscle of the bladder, simultaneously relaxing the urinary sphincter and trigone muscles to generate a smooth contraction wave sufficient to initiate micturition.

Purpose

It is indicated for the treatment of acute postoperative and postpartum non-obstructive urinary retention, and for neurogenic atony of the urinary bladder with retention.

Warnings

- Do not use this medication if you have a mechanical obstruction of the urinary tract or GI tract, active bronchial asthma, or severe bradycardia.\n- Avoid rapid changes in posture from a lying or sitting position to standing, as this drug can cause sudden orthostatic drops in blood pressure.\n- Consult your physician before use if you suffer from hyperthyroidism, active peptic ulcer disease, or advanced coronary artery insufficiency.

Side Effects

- You may experience localized abdominal cramps, mild nausea, frequent salivation, or a brief watery diarrhea.\n- Systemic cholinergic effects such as a sudden warm flush, increased sweating, minor blurred vision, or lightheadedness can occur.\n- Some users report a sudden urgency to urinate, minor bronchial secretions, or a transient slow heart rate.
