Esomeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor that decreases stomach acid production to treat acid reflux, heartburn, and stomach ulcers. It helps heal damage to the esophagus caused by acid reflux and prevents ulcers associated with certain pain relievers. It is typically taken once daily, preferably before a meal, and may also be given by injection in hospital settings.
