Sildenafil citrate is used to treat erectile dysfunction in men by improving blood flow to the penis during sexual stimulation. It works by relaxing blood vessels and blocking an enzyme (PDE5) that limits blood flow, helping achieve and maintain an erection. It is usually taken about an hour before sexual activity and should not be used more than once a day. It does not protect against sexually transmitted infections.
